Red, White, and Blues
I made these quilts for Peter’s aunts, Patsy and Elaine. We’ve visited both at their adorable houses by the sea for family reunions over the years. Patsy on Martha’s Vineyard, and Elaine in San Luis Obispo. Although on opposite coasts, both houses are decorated in red, white, and blue, and both have the same welcoming familial warmth and joy. Peter’s sister found Martha’s Vineyard fabric a number of years ago and we vowed to make something for them. As these projects often go, it took a bit longer than expected, but came together when needed.
I made Patsy’s from half-square triangles. For these triangles, I tried out thangles rolls, which worked well and the pieces came out sufficiently square so as not to require trimming, which is usually my goal. Dreaded trimming. For Elaine’s I went with a brick layout. Peter’s niece, Ava, helped me with the layout and I made her an American girl sized version with the scraps. Terri Vadenais did the quilting for me – love the stars and stripes pantos in variegated thread.
Sadly Patsy passed away last year. She was one of the most joyful women I have ever known and I’m so glad to have known her and have such wonderful memories of her.
